In the first swearing-in ceremony open to the public, Simi Valley Police Chief Randy Adams welcomed his two newest police officers to the force last week.

Randy Van Hoek, 32, and Steve Collett, 25, took their oaths in front of fellow officers and family members. Both officers will begin in the patrol division as they become familiar with department policy, street layout and the city’s trouble spots, Adams said.

Van Hoek received his badge from his wife, Michelle, while Collett got his from his girlfriend.

Before coming to Simi Valley, Collett patrolled the streets of Port Hueneme as a member of that city’s police force. He bought a home in Simi recently and said he looks forward to policing one of the safest cities in the country.

“It’s a bigger department here, there is more opportunity for a promotion,” Collett said.

Van Hoek was an officer in the Los Angeles County Housing Authority. He has about six years of police experience.
