Fullerton Joint Union High School District staff on Tuesday night proposed a school calendar that would again have high school students in Fullerton and La Habra start classes before Labor Day next fall.

According to the proposal, students would report for classes on Thursday, Aug. 31. Labor Day is the following Monday.

If the calendar is accepted at the next board meeting, winter recess in the 2000-01 school year would be Dec. 25 through Jan. 5. Spring recess would be April 9 through April 13, and school would adjourn June 14. Good Friday would fall during the spring recess.

Next year would be only the second in recent memory in which the district began classes before Labor Day, a change prodded by the state’s move to a required minimum of 180 days of instruction.

Greg Bice, assistant superintendent of human resources, told the board that staff had circulated the calendar among teachers, parents and administrators and all had supported the proposal.
