Allred Fails in Bid for Simpson Perjury Charge
Attorney Gloria Allred said Tuesday that the state will not act on her request to prosecute O.J. Simpson for perjury.
Allred said she asked Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer to review Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti’s position on whether the former football great lied when he testified that he had not battered his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.
Allred said Lockyer notified her of his decision after reviewing the records of Simpson’s sworn depositions and testimony from witnesses in his civil trial. He said Garcetti was not wrong when he decided against prosecuting Simpson for perjury.
“This is a sad day for victims of domestic violence and it sends the wrong message to convicted batterers,” Allred said.
Simpson was acquitted in 1995 on murder charges in the stabbing deaths of his ex-wife and her friend Ronald Goldman. In a later civil trial, he was found liable for their deaths and ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages.
