The American Cinematheque is presenting a special re-release of British director Mike Hodges’ 1971 gritty thriller, “Get Carter.” Michael Caine stars as a petty gangster trying to solve his brother’s murder. “Get Carter” will be preceded by a four-minute computer-generated animated film “Los Gringos,” a homage to Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns. By the way, a remake of “Get Carter,” starring Sylvester Stallone, Miranda Richardson, Alan Cumming and Caine, is in production. Warner Bros. will release the remake next year.

“Rosetta,” the Palme d’Or winning Belgian film by co-writing, co-directing brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (“La Promesse”), opens at the Nuart in West Los Angeles for an exclusive two-week run. The film, about a teenage girl (Emilie Dequenne, who shared the best actress award at Cannes) living in a rundown trailer park with her alcoholic mother, whose sole mission is to have a “normal” life, has been hailed by Times film critic Kenneth Turan as “a triumph of humanistic cinema.”

What happens when different traditional cultures refuse to melt into the melting pot, and not only survive but create unprecedented hybrid offshoots? Ask the locally based, 35-year-old AMAN Folk Ensemble, exploring that very subject in a full-evening epic titled “The Immigrants.” Its components include dances from Russia, Ireland, Armenia, Canada, Hungary, south India, South Africa and South America, plus several native to North America. Its theme is a celebration of E Pluribus Unum (Out of Many, One), a motto familiar from American coins but seldom used as an inspiration for dancing. “The Immigrants” premiered in Charleston, W. Va., two weeks ago, and its Glendale performances are the first on the West Coast.
