Hollywood Secession Bid Gets Underway

Share

Three Hollywood residents on Sunday announced plans to circulate petitions proposing a feasibility study for creating an independent Hollywood, in a move similar to secession drives in the San Fernando Valley and the harbor area.

Attorney Mitchell Green, Fares Wehbe and cafe owner Gene La Pietra said they have formed a group called Hollywood Vote.

Although the three had not settled on what the boundaries for the new city would be, they said initial parameters might include Mulholland Highway on the north, 6th Street on the south, La Cienega Boulevard on the west and Riverside Drive and Hyperion Avenue on the east.

“The reason I’m doing this is very simple,” said Wehbe. “I want to find out if we can have a Hollywood that is a better place to live, work and visit for the millions of folks who come here.”

To qualify for a study, the new group would have to collect signatures from 25% of the voters within the proposed area.

Hollywood was independent of Los Angeles until 1911.
