A man killed in a felony hit-and-run accident in Saugus over the weekend was identified Sunday as Art Mesa, 20, of Palmdale, according to the CHP.

Authorities also continue searching for the driver of the 1993 Honda Civic in which Mesa was a passenger.

The car was traveling on Plum Canyon Road, near Via Joyce Drive, when it veered out of control and slammed into a light pole about 5:10 p.m. Saturday, said Officer Frank Sansone, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The impact of the crash split the car in two.

Paramedics pronounced Mesa dead at the scene, Sansone said.

The driver, described by police as a white teenager, about 6 feet tall and wearing a blue-and-white shirt and baggy pants, was last seen running away from the wreckage, witnesses said.

Regardless of whether the driver was at fault, “the fact that he ran away from an accident he was involved in that left someone injured or killed makes it a felony,” Sansone said.

The case remains under investigation.
