In a preliminary step toward determining whether to build a new school on the former Hughes Aircraft/General Motors division property, the Fullerton school board Tuesday night authorized a $3,000 environmental assessment of the site.

The 10 acres of land is north of Malvern Avenue near Gilbert Street and Pioneer Avenue. Developers are planning projects that could add many new homes in the area and overburden existing local elementary schools.

The environmental study, to be carried out by Giles Engineering Associates of Anaheim, will investigate the site and surrounding area for evidence of the storage, usage, manufacture or disposal of hazardous substances in soil or ground water.

A written report summarizing the findings is due in about four weeks.
