Anaheim Puts End to Streak

Coach Allen Carter wondered if it would ever end. So did Anaheim’s boosters. And many of the players charged with ending the long slump weren’t even at the school when it began.

Anaheim’s 21-12 upset of previously unbeaten Estancia Friday night at Orange Coast College ended a 24-game losing streak.

“The kids are all excited,” Carter said. “There were tears in their eyes. It’s been long overdue.”

David Lopez rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown in 22 carries for Anaheim (1-3).

Matt Mueller had a solid game for Estancia (3-1), rushing for 61 yards in 10 carries.

The Colonists (1-3) did a great job of containing running back Marshall Hendricks, which Carter said was essential for any chance at victory. Despite scoring both Eagle touchdowns, Hendricks managed only 102 yards of total offense and was stopped behind the line of scrimmage five times.

After the Eagles turned the ball over on downs, Anaheim marched 68 yards in 10 plays and scored on a 19-yard touchdown run by Sergio Martinez.

The Eagles scored with just over a minute remaining in the half when Hendricks took it in from the two.

Anaheim’s biggest play of the night came on a fourth and 10, when quarterback Ryan Paterson hooked up with Oscar Mateo on a 25-yard completion. Three plays later, Paterson scored from one-yard out to extend Anaheim’s lead to 14-6.
