University Adjusts to Smack Around Orange
University scored 29 consecutive points to pull away from Orange for a 36-14 victory and extend the Panthers’ losing streak to 16 games Friday at El Modena High.
“We played sloppy early in the game, but that was because Orange played so hard,” University Coach Mark Cunningham said. “They played hard and had a good plan. We had to make some adjustments.”
Whatever University did, it worked.
After the Panthers (0-4) scored two touchdowns, the second coming on a two-yard run by quarterback C.J. Joiner to go up 14-7 with 11:54 left in the first half, the Trojans took control.
Jacque Newsome ran for a two-yard touchdown to pull University (2-2), to within 14-13 with 6:37 left in the half.
Zach Sherwood’s 27-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining in the half gave University the lead, 16-14.
Newsome scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter to finish a 13-play, 65-yard drive. University took a 29-14 lead when quarterback Pat Josten found tight end Kevin Conlin open for a 16-yard touchdown. Josten completed 11 of 18 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
The Trojans final score came when defensive lineman Ryan Pahua fell on the ball in the end zone after it was knocked loose from Joiner.
