CSUN Asks Public to Go for a Walk

Cal State Northridge invites the community to join students, staff and faculty as they march through Hollywood on Oct. 17 as part of AIDS Walk Los Angeles.

More than 1,000 people are expected to make up Team CSUN as the group joins teams from across Southern California to raise awareness of AIDS and HIV.

This year’s AIDS Walk theme is “I walk because . . . .” Team members are asked to focus on their personal reason for walking as they complete the 10K course, organizers said. For information, call (818) 677-2130.

Flying High: George C. MacDonald, a retired physics and math teacher at Burroughs High School in Burbank, has donated his hand-built Thorp T-18 aircraft to Glendale Community College, school officials said. The plane will be used in the school’s aviation department as a training aid for the power plant and airframe program.

Artists Institute: The Music Center of Los Angeles County will mark the 20th anniversary of its Education Division with a three-day Artists Institute designed to energize its artists who teach in classrooms across Southern California, organizers said. During the program, which runs from Thursday through Saturday, artists will develop new techniques for using the arts to enhance student learning. They will also create performances for a free Family Festival and Parade, the culminating event in a yearlong celebration set for May 20.

Clean Sweep: Students from Woodcrest School in Encino will pick up trash and plant trees along Ventura Boulevard between Tampa Avenue and Reseda Boulevard in Tarzana on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to mark Make A Difference Day USA. Los Angeles Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski is among the invited guests. For information, call Michele Carlin, education chairwoman of the Tarzana Chamber of Commerce at (818) 345-3002.

Shakespeare on Stage: Glendale Community College’s Theater Arts Department will present Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” on three consecutive Thursday-to-Sunday weekends beginning Thursday and ending Oct. 24. Performances begin at 8 p.m., Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. The play, directed by Matt Foyer, will be staged in the GCC Auditorium Mainstage Theatre. Catherine Chou, a sophomore at Granada Hills High School, is the first-place winner of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation 1999 Swackhamer Peace Essay Contest. The 14-year-old Northridge resident will receive a $1,500 cash award. The contest, open to high school students worldwide, seeks constructive alternatives to war. In her essay, Catherine encourages her peers to form groups, stage rallies, write letters and launch petition drives to press for the elimination of nuclear weapons. The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is an international nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization based in Santa Barbara.
