8 pm: Dance

When dramatic modern dance connects with steamy Argentine ballroom traditions, the result is Tangokinesis, both the name of a company and the title of a popular work choreographed by its founder, Ana Maria Stekelman. Previously the director of the Ballet Contemporaneo del Teatro San Martin in Buenos Aires, Stekelman started Tangokinesis eight years ago and is currently leading the eight-dancer ensemble on its first extensive U.S. tour. Stekelman likes setting tango moves to unorthodox accompaniments--Vivaldi’s “Stabat Mater,” for example--with the dancers’ excellence putting them in “a miss-them-at-your-own-peril category,” according to Dance Magazine.

* Tangokinesis, Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, 8 p.m. $15 to $40. (800) 414-ALEX. Also Oct. 15, 8 p.m., in the Smothers Theatre, Pepperdine University, 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. $30. (310) 456-4556. Also Oct. 19, 8 p.m., in Campbell Hall, UC Santa Barbara. $12 to $22.
