Team captain and leader by example. Renowned for molar-rattling checks and laser-like slap shots from the blue line. Norris Trophy winner as NHL’s top defenseman in 1997-98. All-time King defenseman leader with 323 points.

Signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Kings in April, then signed a three-year contact three days later. Scored a goal in his NHL debut in the King season finale against St. Louis.

Completed his fifth season with the Kings. Averaged 17.8 minutes of ice time. He was Buffalo’s first-round selection (13th overall) in the 1991 entry draft. Has appeared in 274 NHL games over the past seven seasons.

Chartrand, 5-11 and 185 pounds, was signed as a free agent in July after playing last season for St. John’s in the AHL. He scored 30 points for St. John’s in 64 games. Bench press of 335 ties with Steve McKenna as team’s best.
