Beachgoers at Thousand Steps Beach were met this weekend with signs saying the beach was closed due to contamination.
But the signs, posted earlier in the week, were supposed to have been removed by the weekend.
Monica Mazur, an Orange County environmental health specialist, said the beach had been closed for part of last week due to increased bacteria counts in the water. However, the danger has passed and the signs should have been removed Thursday, she said.
Thousand Steps Beach is rarely closed due to bacteria because it is not near drainage sites. The cause of the bacteria was unknown, Mazur said.
