There has been a strong response to the clothing drive to benefit Ventura’s Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, said Jill Zawisza of the Mary Baird Women’s Center at Moorpark College.

The drive, which accepts clothing as well as toiletries and children’s toys, has been going on throughout the month. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“People have dropped off clothes and said, ‘I’m really glad to be helping out,’ ” Zawisza said. ‘They all make reference to this issue as being important to them.”

The women’s center, located in the library at Moorpark College, will send the donations to the coalition’s thrift shop and its battered-women’s shelter.

Zawisza, who volunteers at the shelter, said she conceived of the drive as a way to raise awareness of domestic violence, and has been surprised at the response.

“I think it is something that people really connect with,” she said. “They are either in an abusive relationship or know of someone in an abusive relationship.”
