About $11 million in state traffic safety funds have been awarded to Orange and Los Angeles county communities, the state announced this week.
The grants will be administered by the California Office of Traffic Safety to provide support for safety programs, including bicycle and pedestrian safety, emergency medical services and police traffic services among others.
Maria Contreras-Sweet, secretary of the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, said the grants will help the state lower California’s mileage death rate to one fatality for every 100 million miles driven by 2001.
The state is now at 1.19 per 100 million miles, one of the best in the nation, Contreras-Sweet said.
Make Children Traffic Safe, the first grant to be announced, will provide helmets to 100,000 students in 125 elementary schools.
The secretary announced 14 other grants in Orange County and 36 in L.A. County.
