No Offensive Giant

The New York Giant offense has not scored a touchdown in 11 quarters, contributing only three field goals in the last two games. And the only Giant touchdown in Monday night’s 13-10 victory over the Dallas Cowboys was scored on a punt return by Tiki Barber.

But that’s of little solace to the New Orleans Saints, who play the Giants on Sunday at East Rutherford, N.J.

“When you are 1-4,” Saint Coach Mike Ditka said, “St. Mary’s High School scares you, believe me.”

Brad Johnson, who may be pressed into service as the Washington Redskins’ holder because punter-holder Matt Turk has a broken finger, said the new duty will not interfere with his quarterback job.

“The distraction for me,” he said, “is having to stay after practice.”

With first-round draft pick L.J. Shelton moving into the starting lineup at left tackle, the Arizona Cardinals have the youngest tackle tandem in the NFL. He and right tackle Anthony Clement, in his second season, are 23, and Clement, for all practical purposes, should be considered a rookie--he sat out last season because of a back injury.

The Cardinals, though, can’t do much worse with the youngsters up front. They are 29th of 31 NFL teams in offense and 30th in rushing, averaging 68.7 yards on the ground.
