Quarterback Villanueva Sets Record for Chapman

Chapman quarterback Stanley Villanueva completed a school-record five touchdown passes in the first half and the Panthers held off Menlo for a 44-33 homecoming victory Saturday night in Orange.

Marvin Qualls also set a school record by catching three touchdown passes, two in the first quarter.

Chapman (3-3) scored with less than nine minutes left in the first quarter when Villanueva threw a four-yard pass to Qualls.

After Steve Machuca recovered a fumble on the kickoff, the Panthers went 25 yards in five plays, capped by a 14-yard pass to Qualls.

With 3:41 left in the quarter, Villanueva hooked up with Eric Del Conte for eight yards and a 21-0 lead.

Villanueva’s fourth touchdown pass of 31 yards to Qualls came early in the second quarter, and he broke the record previously held by Greg Hyland and Curtis Robinson when he threw a 10-yard pass to Rasheed Phillips with 24 seconds left in the half.

After Menlo (3-3) scored on the opening drive of the second half, Mark Hastings returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown and the Panthers increased their lead to 41-14.

Villanueva was 18 of 31 for 189 yards and Qualls had nine passes for 103. At one stretch in the first half, Villanueva completed nine consecutive passes.

Zamir Amin completed 24 of 41 for 358 yards for Menlo.
