America West Cuts Fares to 3 Cities; Rivals Follow

America West Airlines, which periodically triggers airline price wars to and from Orange County, was at it again Monday, cutting its round-trip ticket price to $106 for travel between John Wayne Airport and Sacramento, Las Vegas and Phoenix.
United Airlines matched the $106 fare on the Phoenix and Las Vegas routes, online booking services showed, and American Airlines had a $106 fare as well on the Las Vegas route.
America West previously had charged $236 round trip to Phoenix, $176 to Sacramento and $174 to Las Vegas for its cheapest fares. The $106 fares require a seven-day advance purchase, have additional restrictions, and don’t include taxes and landing fees.
Even with the lower fares, it’s still generally cheaper to fly from the Los Angeles or Ontario airports than from Orange County. For example, at least five airlines have $58 round-trip fares between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
