The Traffic Commission will decide today whether to recommend to the City Council that it change city codes to allow crossing guards at Niguel Hills Middle School. The city’s traffic codes, adapted from state codes, provide crossing guards only outside elementary schools, according to a city report.

But Dave Rogers, the city’s traffic engineer, said the city should provide two crossing guards at the middle school. “There really are legitimate traffic safety reasons at Niguel Hills,” said Rogers, who would like the guards in place by Tuesday. “I wouldn’t recommend changing the city’s criteria unless there were.”

The city would probably contract the guards from police services, Rogers said. He estimated each guard would cost about $8,600 a year.
