Laguna Beach Unified District’s school board voted 3 to 2 to maintain its voluntary status, turning down a measure that would have paid each of the five members $240 a month.
The measure, if it had passed, would have cost the district $14,400 per year. As it stands, board members are eligible to receive health benefits, but do not get reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses such as stationery, travel, or mileage.
Some members want to be compensated for those daily expenses.
The Laguna district is the only school board in Orange County that is not paid for its services.
