Murray Helps Troy Take Care of Sonora Early

Troy running back Brett Murray rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns in 25 carries to carry Troy to a 27-13 victory over Sonora in a Freeway League game Friday at La Habra High.

Murray started the game’s scoring with a six-yard run that capped a 64-yard drive early in the first quarter.

Troy (6-2, 2-1 in league) went on to take a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks to Jordan Oliver’s touchdown passes of 29 yards to Ryan Welch and 25 yards to Mark Ahlberg.

Welch finished with five receptions for 103 yards.

Sonora (3-5, 1-2) suffered through a mistake-filled game, committing four turnovers with three interceptions and one fumble. The fumble set up Oliver’s scoring pass to Welch in the first quarter.

Sonora finally got on the scoreboard in the second quarter, when David Villagomez scored on a two-yard run with 1:48 left, capping a 62-yard drive and making the score 21-7 at halftime.

Murray supplied the only scoring in the third quarter on a two-yard run with 13 seconds left, capping a 35-yard drive set up by Tyler Kennelly’s interception. Kennelly had three interceptions on the night.

Sonora scored in the fourth quarter when Nick Ross connected with David Mayfield on a six-yard pass with 5:13 left.
