Rave Party

Re “Officials’ Approval of ‘Rave’ Event Criticized,” Aug. 31: Barry Nelson’s comment equating a rave party to an “outdoor drug-fest” is a gross generalization that worries me as to how this chief ranger for the BLM in San Bernardino County is managing public lands. True, a rave can be a big public event, but the lands are public, and where the public congregates, there may likely be alcohol and other drugs consumed.

A reasonable approach may entail restrictions on a proposed event, like security personnel to control illegal drug use. This encroachment on personal freedoms (public lands being available for public use) disturbs me. It’s indeed tragic that a 15-year-old girl and four others were killed in an auto accident. But the rave party did not cause that. Angeles Crest Highway is a winding mountain road. Driving it at night would be even more dangerous. Personal responsibility is the key. Drive carefully when on a mountain road. Don’t drive after consuming alcohol or drugs. Take responsibility for the activities of your children, perhaps prohibiting attendance at all-night parties in the mountains.

You had a photo that showed the litter left after the rave party (Aug. 30). Who is responsible for cleaning this litter? Is it the promoter, the Forest Service or the taxpayer?
