AROUND THE MAJORS : Leyland Considers Quitting

Colorado Manager Jim Leyland, disappointed with the performance of his team, is considering retiring as a baseball manager, according to the Denver Post. Leyland, in his first season with Colorado, said after 35 years in professional baseball, he no longer is certain he has the fire to lead a team.

Hall of Famer Willie Stargell has been hospitalized for at least three weeks, undergoing treatment for an undisclosed problem with one of his organs. Stargell, who has battled several medical problems for the last 10 years, was admitted to a Pittsburgh hospital under an assumed name for tests, according to three sources close to the Pirates, who would not disclose the condition or which organ was affected.. . . . Willie Mays Sr., the father of the Hall of Fame outfielder, died at Redwood City after a brief illness. He was 89.

Toronto starting pitcher Joey Hamilton, who has pitched through pain for most of the season, is out for the season because of a sore shoulder, and may undergo exploratory surgery next week.. . . . Cleveland activated outfielder Kenny Lofton, who had been sidelined since Aug. 16 because of a strained right hamstring.

Other roster moves included: The Yankees called up outfielder Darryl Strawberry from triple-A Columbus. . . . Boston activated second baseman Jeff Frye from the 15-day disabled list.. . . . Toronto Manager Jim Fregosi said the club will activate designated hitter David Segui from the disabled list today.. . . . Seattle called up former Dodger infielder Mike Blowers.. . . .
