VENTURA COUNTY ROUNDUP : Countywide : Accidents, Arrests Up This Labor Day
For the sixth consecutive Labor Day weekend, there were no fatalities on Ventura County’s highways and freeways, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.
But drunk-driving arrests and accidents increased over last year’s holiday, said Officer Dave Cockrill.
During the CHP’s maximum enforcement period--between 6 p.m. Friday and midnight Monday--36 people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. During the same period last year, there were 28 arrests.
There were 21 accidents this year compared with 18 in 1998. Seven involved injuries, and three of them involved suspected drunk drivers, Cockrill said.
In 1998, there were four crashes involving injuries, and one of those involved a drunk driver.
