The City Council’s decision Tuesday to fire the city manager could cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Twenty-seven-year City Manager Art Simonian, whose base salary was $142,116 a year, will remain on paid administrative leave through Dec. 9, at a cost of about $35,500. During that time the city will also pay $49,500 to consultant Dan Miller to fill in during that time. Legal disputes between Simonian and the city will also cost up to $165 an hour in attorney fees for an untold number of hours.

Yorba Linda--Yorba Linda Councilman Mark Schwing was misquoted in a story Sept. 9 about the cost of hiring an interim city manager. What he said was: “There may be other people out there who are willing to do it for less than $15,600 a month.”

“It seems to me like we’re getting rid of one city manager because he cost the city $200,000 a year just to pay another one about the same amount,” said City Councilman Mark Schwing, just before voting against Simonian’s termination.
