VALLEY ROUNDUP : Lake View Terrace : County Inmate Injured While Fighting Brush Fire
A county inmate injured by falling rocks while fighting a 10-acre brush fire was in serious condition Friday, authorities said.
The inmate, whose identity is being withheld, was one of two prisoners hurt while fighting a blaze that began shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday near Lopez Canyon Road and Boy Scout Mountainway, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Mark Tolbert said.
The prisoner remained at Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, where the second injured man also was treated for bruises and returned to his camp assignment.
More than 100 firefighters from the city and county fire departments, along with several dozen inmates and five helicopters, were called to fight the blaze in an area of rugged terrain and heavy brush. The fire was extinguished in 51 minutes, said Jim Wells, a Los Angeles city Fire Department spokesman.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, officials said.
