VALLEY ROUNDUP : Valleywide : Workshops Are Offered for Community Leaders

Share

A nonprofit community group will host a series of leadership development workshops at three locations across the Valley.

Valley Organized in Community Efforts, or VOICE, will sponsor the meetings, which will teach participants ways to improve their communities, said co-chairwoman Cecelia Barragan.

“A lot of us don’t feel we have any power outside of our little worlds,” Barragan said. “This will give you the tools on how to work in the community you live in.”

During the training, participants will do role playing games and learn how to approach political and community leaders, Barragan said. They will also learn practical ways to improve their neighborhoods, including how to organize voter drives during elections, remove graffiti or get more lights installed on a street.

“Anyone can do this. It doesn’t take anyone with particular schooling,” Barragan said.

The free workshops will be at San Fernando Elementary School cafeteria, 1130 Mott St., San Fernando on Tuesday and Sept. 28, Oct. 12 and 26 and Nov. 9; St. Elisabeth Catholic Church, 6635 Tobias Ave., Van Nuys on Sept. 20, Oct. 4 and 18, and Nov. 1 and 15; and Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 22021 Gault St., Canoga Park next Thursday, Oct. 14 and 28 and Nov. 11.

All of the meetings will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
