State Seeking Public’s View on Detonation Plan : Rocketdyne: Bombs left in tests near Chatsworth would be exploded.

Share

The military years ago tested bombs at Rocketdyne’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory near Chatsworth and left behind 62 explosive devices, which were found decaying in shrubbery earlier this year.

State environmental officials want to explode the bombs in a controlled detonation to prevent a possible accident. But they first want to know what the public thinks about the plan.

The proposal calls for triggering the blasts within a steel box filled with water bags, sand and armor plates. The box is designed to contain all shock waves and emissions, with the risk to neighbors low, according to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.

The blast is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 23, though that date is subject to comments received during the public review period scheduled to run until Thursday.
