COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Beats Rider in Soccer

UC Irvine struck early and went on to shut out Rider University, 2-0, at the UC Irvine Invitational women’s soccer tournament Friday night.

The Anteaters (3-1-1) got a goal from junior Cyndi Tredway just two minutes into the game. It followed a shot by Janelle Doyle that rebounded off Rider goalkeeper Lynda Acchitelli.

Irvine’s defense did a good job and in the 76th minute freshman Brittny Zimmeran struck from 20 yards out off an assist from junior Katie Sheppard.

In the opening game at the UC Irvine Invitational:

San Jose State 2, Cal State Fullerton 1--Molly Cowell scored in the 71st minute to win it for the host Spartans (4-1). Kris Quiroz scored the only goal for the Titans (2-3).

At the Redlands women’s soccer tournament:

Concordia 2, Redlands 0--Goals by Lisa Kulovitz and Evelyn Miles lifted Concordia (2-1) over host Redlands (0-2) in the opening round.

Goalie Crystal Rodriguez had 19 saves for the Eagles.

At the San Diego men’s soccer tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 3, Sacramento State 0--Antonio Martinez, Ricky Melendez and Duncan Oughton each scored goals for the host Titans (3-0).

In nonconference play:

Pomona Pitzer 3, Chapman 1--Antony Reyes scored three goals for Pomona (1-0) in the second half. Aaron Poling scored for Chapman (0-1) in the 65th minute with an assist from Scott Martino.

Chapman outshot Pomona, 18-8.

In the Oregon Invitational women’s volleyball tournament:

Titans lose twice--Fullerton (2-4) hit a minus-.044 and lost to host Oregon, 16-14, 15-7, 15-8, and to Minnesota, 15-2, 15-5, 15-2. Jamie Ivers had eight digs for the Titans in the two matches.
