Adventure Pass

Share

* On a recent trip, I came face to face with the so-called Adventure Pass. It seems that families must now pay for one of these in order to stop by the road and have a picnic with their children, or to take a walk in the woods. What’s next? Shall we pay for a walk on the beach? Or perhaps on the sidewalks? These are our parks, supposedly for all to enjoy. I do believe that is what Teddy Roosevelt had in mind.

Having been on welfare for four years while going to college so I could raise my children, I don’t know what I would have done to show my children the joys of our natural world, if I had had to pay for each foray into the woods, each trip to the snow line. Our country can give subsidies to loggers, cattle ranchers and even tobacco growers, but it can’t afford a walk in the woods for children. For shame!
