The Planning Commission on Wednesday approved a 1.5-acre biofiltration device for the CR & R Inc. trash and recycling center. The device will help combat odor created from decomposing trash. Manager Mark Lloyd said the biofilter will cost about $1 million and will provide a safe, effective and environmentally friendly way of breaking down malodorous compounds from inside the CR & R facility. The device will pump air from the facility through a series of pipes leading to an outside area containing materials such as wood chips and grass clippings. These materials will support the generation of bacteria capable of breaking down the odors that often aggravate residents around CR & R.

Lloyd said CR & R intends to plant trees and shrubbery on top of the biofilter, so the device should also improve the looks of CR & R.
