Cunningham Likes Mr. Ed

Kansas City Coach Gunther Cunningham doesn’t have many good players of his own, so it’s understandable why he has admiration for others. “It is amazing to me about Ed McCaffrey,” Cunningham said of the Denver wide receiver. “He is probably the most underrated football player that I have ever seen in my life. He blocks, he catches balls, he does everything he is supposed to do. I hope he doesn’t start throwing too.”

Defensive end Neil Smith, who has fallen so far the Broncos did not activate him for their first game, will return to Kansas City and get the chance to play against his old team. “We just don’t do it for his return [to Kansas City],” Denver Coach Mike Shanahan said. Sure. Smith has 98 sacks, and will undoubtedly be charging hard to reach 100 against his former team.

The Chargers are in first place, half a game up on everyone else in games lost, but now, doggone it, they have to play a game. And it isn’t fair, because they don’t play very well. They have scored one touchdown or fewer in 23 of their last 32 games, and have the worst record in the NFL since the midway point of 1997, 5-19.
