Chiefs Lose Anders for Season

Share

One day after the best game of his career, Kansas City Chief running back Kimble Anders had surgery on his Achilles’ tendon and will be sidelined the rest of the season.

Anders, a former Pro Bowl fullback, was converted this year to tailback and carried 22 times for 142 yards in Sunday’s victory over the Denver Broncos--the most yards gained by a Kansas City running back since 1991. He was injured late in the fourth quarter.

Bam Morris will probably replace Anders.

Also, left guard Dave Szott underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The former All-Pro, who missed all of last season because of an arm injury, hopes to return in two weeks.

Off to an 0-2 start, the Denver Broncos got some more bad news when they learned that linebacker John Mobley will be sidelined for the season after tearing a ligament in his right knee Sunday.

The Cincinnati Bengals are getting rookie quarterback Akili Smith ready for his first NFL start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, holding out the slimmest hope that Jeff Blake (sprained shoulder) will play.

Blake’s injury leaves the 0-2 Bengals in a worst-case scenario of starting a rookie quarterback who arrived in camp less than a month ago after a lengthy holdout.

Stoney Case, a fifth-year pro who has seen limited action, will replace Scott Mitchell as the starting quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens against the Cleveland Browns.

Coach Brian Billick said he expects the move to last the rest of the season.

Mitchell, acquired during the off-season from the Detroit Lions, was ineffective in the Ravens’ first two games, both losses, going 24 for 56 for 236 yards with four interceptions and one touchdown.
