Re “Ex-Officer Calls Corruption a Chronic ‘Cancer,’ ” Sept. 21: So Rafael Perez can’t sleep at night because he is a corrupt cop? Rot in hell, Rafael.

I did 27-plus years with the LAPD and I sleep like a baby at night. Oh, I forgot. I didn’t steal eight pounds of cocaine. I didn’t shoot anyone in 27 years, let alone a handcuffed suspect.

You made your bed, now take it like a man.

It’s a blot on the justice system that a poltroon like Perez only gets a five-year sentence for his crimes. Perez shot and framed an innocent man for a 23-year prison term and only gets a slap on the wrist.

Hopefully, the judge will send Perez to the same maximum security prison that his victims were sentenced to. Five years of hard time may be more than a dirty cop can survive, but that’s what he deserves. Remember that this vulture was part of an assassination attempt.

If we were to follow the precepts of modern business practices, we should privatize government security. Continued corrupt police practices only exist in an atmosphere of impunity. Would a private security company reprimand a supervisor for ignoring beatings by his subordinates? No. If this were private industry there would be a rain of pink slips over the Rampart station.

These officers based their operating tactics on fear, fear of physical force. Perhaps the fear of a short career would contain them.
