Shyrone Stith, Ike Charlton and Corey Moore rescued No. 8 Virginia Tech from a great 57-minute show by Clemson quarterback Brandon Streeter on Thursday night, lifting the Hokies to a tense 31-11 victory over the Tigers at Blacksburg, Va.

Stith rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown, Charlton picked off Streeter’s pass with 3:09 left and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown and Moore turned a sack and fumble by Streeter into a 32-yard scoring play 38 seconds later for the Hokies (3-0).

Clemson (1-2) lost despite 27 completions in 43 attempts by Streeter, who had the Hokies’ top-ranked defense on its heels until Charlton’s touchdown.

The defensive scores were the first of the season for the Hokies, and gave them 34 touchdowns in 141 games since Frank Beamer became coach in 1987.

The game marked the return of freshman sensation Michael Vick to the Hokies’ lineup. Unlike the first game, when he was spectacular, Vick showed his inexperience by throwing three interceptions and trying to force the action.
