Rapids Move Closer to First Place With Shootout Victory

Colorado’s Ross Paule scored on Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola in the sixth round of a shootout Saturday night to give the Rapids a 1-0 victory before 9,592 at Kansas City, Mo.

The Wizards’ Chris Henderson was wide with his kick after Paule scored.

It was the third consecutive shootout for Kansas City (8-22), which also lost one to Colorado (19-9) two weeks ago.

The Rapids are one point behind the Galaxy for first place in the Western Conference.

The Wizards dominated possession during regulation and got off 16 shots to Colorado’s 10, but couldn’t get the ball in the net. Colorado goalkeeper Ian Feuer recorded five of his six saves in the last 45 minutes.

New York/New Jersey 2, Tampa Bay 1--Eduardo Hurtado and Henry Zambrano scored in the first half as the MetroStars surprised the playoff-bound Mutiny before 12,101 at Tampa Bay. New York/New Jersey won three of four against Tampa Bay this season.

Chad McCarty scored for the Mutiny, which is battling Miami for third place in the Eastern Conference.

Tampa Bay (14-16) has lost three in a row, but still has a six-point lead over the Fusion.

Hurtado scored in the fifth minute, Zambrano added his in the 22nd.
