FIVE KEY MOMENTS

Share

1 After USC’s David Newbury misses his second overtime field goal, coupled with one he missed in the last two minutes of regulation, Oregon’s Josh Frankel kicks a 27-yard field goal to give the Ducks a 33-30 victory in three overtimes. USC falls to 1-3 in overtime games, all the losses on the road.

2 Five-foot-eight tailback Chad Morton follows new tank fullback Faaesea Mailo, a 6-5, 330-pound offensive lineman, into the end zone to give Trojans a 23-20 lead with 3:08 to play. The extra point is missed on a bad snap, but USC recovers a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

3 The second half opens with no No. 3 on the field for USC. Mike Van Raaphorst lines up at quarterback for the Trojans, sending confusion through the Trojan cheering section. Quarterback Carson Palmer is still inside because of a right shoulder injury, and later emerges with his arm in a sling. Van Raaphorst has experience after starting eight games last season before Palmer took over the job. But even though the score is tied, 10-10, the Trojans look done.

4 R. Jay Soward’s resurgent game takes a sour twist when he makes a catch at the Oregon 31-yard line, then fumbles. Oregon recovers, and with the help of a 43-yard pass from A.J. Feeley to Tony Hartley, embarks on a touchdown drive that gives Oregon a 20-10 lead in the third quarter.

5 USC’s defense, trying to take up the slack with Palmer out, bends and then breaks. Two costly penalties--a facemask that negates a sack and a pass-interference call against Antuan Simmons when he shoves a receiver out of bounds--give Oregon a first down at the USC seven-yard line. The defense stiffens enough to thwart a touchdown, but Oregon kicks a field goal for a 13-10 lead.
