Miami Dolphin defensive end Dimitrius Underwood was found on a city street Sunday afternoon, bleeding from a neck wound that police described as a life-threatening injury.

“He was cut. We’re still investigating the nature of the injury,” said a police spokeswoman. She said Underwood was discovered lying on a street about two blocks south of the state capitol in downtown Lansing.

He was taken to Sparrow Hospital for surgery. “Before he had surgery, the hospital said ‘It doesn’t look good’ and ‘He might not make it,’ ” the police spokeswoman told the Detroit Free Press.

Lansing police said Underwood had been arrested Saturday night and released on bond. WLNS and WSYM-TV reported the charge was failing to pay child support.

Underwood has 17-month-old twins who live with their mother in Lansing.

After his arrest, an unidentified woman posted his $500 bond. But he declined to leave immediately, the Free Press reported. The newspaper also reported that Underwood was shirtless when he was found.

Underwood, a first-round draft pick out of Michigan State, disappeared from the Minnesota Vikings’ training camp after one practice. He was later claimed by the Dolphins after the Vikings released him. Underwood sacrificed a $1.75-million signing bonus by leaving the Vikings.
