Gun Safety Lock Giveaway Expanded

A gun lock giveaway program that began in Oxnard has been expanded to Port Hueneme.

The free locks will be distributed by the Faith Connection, based at North Oxnard United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Larry Tyler Wayman said Port Hueneme was added to the program to increase the number of cable locks distributed. Wayman said the group has only given away two locks since the program began in August.

Port Hueneme Police Chief Steve Campbell said the department joined the program to do something proactive.

“We usually see the tragedy after it has occurred,” Campbell said Monday in front of police headquarters.

The gun locks will be available at the Police Department front desk between 8 a.m. and midnight and through Wayman’s church in Oxnard. The cable locks--which retail for $4 to $5--are recommended by the National Rifle Assn. and gun shop owners. To install the locks, the chamber of the gun must be empty.

While some gun owners argue that safety locks inhibit easy access in emergencies, Wayman said the giveaway is particularly important to families with children.

“This is a public health issue,” Wayman said. “The church is very concerned about the health, well-being and spirit of individuals, families and the community.”
