Power Outage Strikes USC’s Main Campus

About a third of USC’s main campus lost power Monday, resulting in a brief midday interruption.

Some professors moved their classes outdoors and eight employees were stuck in elevators, said university spokeswoman Zsa Zsa Gershick. But no important operations were interrupted.

“We just went with the flow, or the lack thereof,” she said.

The power outage began at 1:36 p.m. and lasted for 30 to 40 minutes, according to Gershick.

Only USC’s main campus, one mile south of downtown near Exposition Park, was affected, None of USC’s medical facilities was involved, she said. The campus receives its power from the city’s Department of Water and Power.

The outage was apparently caused by problems in the department’s power lines, Gershick said.
