Split Puts Boston Back in Playoffs

The Boston Red Sox earned their way back to the playoffs Wednesday night, clinching at least the American League wild card by beating the Chicago White Sox, 6-2, in the opener of a doubleheader.

“We’re happy, but not content,” shortstop Nomar Garciaparra said after the Red Sox clinched a postseason berth for the second straight season.

Pedro Martinez, whose 23 wins are the most in the majors, didn’t pitch, but the Red Sox ace bolted out of the dugout and did a nifty cartwheel near the mound after Chicago’s Mike Caruso lined into a game-ending double play in the opener.

The Red Sox high-fived their way off the field, but had to keep their celebration on ice until the second game--won by the White Sox, 4-2--was over.

The loss didn’t dampen the party.

“Everybody picked us to be in last place. Well, we’re here again,” Martinez said. “I think we’re going to go a lot farther this year.”

Boston Manager Jimy Williams went through the clubhouse, shaking hands with each player and giving congratulatory hugs.

“We have attained something and it’s very special,” Williams said.

It marks Boston’s first consecutive playoff appearances since 1915-16.

The Red Sox will face either Cleveland or Texas in the best-of-five first-round series. The Indians eliminated Boston from the postseason in 1998 and 1995.
