A 10-year-old girl was killed Saturday in Newport Beach when the convertible roadster her father was driving struck a center divider and flipped over, authorities said.

Yvette Riley of Corona del Mar was pronounced dead about 2:50 p.m. at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, said Joseph Luckey, Orange County’s supervising deputy coroner. Her injured father, David Riley, 41, was taken to the same hospital.

The two were driving together around 2 p.m. in a replica 1932 Ford Coupe convertible. As they drove along San Miguel Drive near MacArthur Boulevard, the vehicle began experiencing gear problems and unexpectedly lunged forward, Luckey said.

Riley lost control of the car, which collided with the center median and overturned, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Jim Kaminsky. Witnesses rushed to help the father and daughter until paramedics arrived.

Kaminsky said police will inspect the car to determine why the driver lost control. He said investigators have ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash.
