First Defendant Sentenced in San Bernardino Bribery Case
The first of seven defendants who pleaded guilty in a bribery scandal involving millions of dollars of San Bernardino County government contracts was sentenced Monday to six months in federal custody.
Ronald Canham, a 51-year-old management consultant from San Diego, was ordered to spend three months in prison and three months in a halfway house and pay $14,000 in restitution and fines.
Canham pleaded guilty last year to paying a $10,000 cash bribe to James J. Hwalek, the county’s former administrative officer, who used his influence to persuade the Board of Supervisors to award Canham a $94,000 motivational training contract.
