HUNTINGTON BEACH
The City Council this week changed an ordinance that until now prohibited riding motorized scooters on roads and highways.
State law allows these small two-wheeled vehicles, sold as “Go-Peds” or “Zips,” to be operated by 16-year-olds without a driver’s license or insurance on roads at speeds under 25 mph, according to a city memo dated Monday.
The city’s law had to be changed to comply with the state, but it still prohibits riding scooters on bikeways or trails unless they are part of a highway or road.
