The City Council unanimously decided recently to grant a tree-removal permit to property owner Dick Spaulding for one eucalyptus tree infected with red gum lerp psyllid, a tiny insect that has infested trees throughout the city. The council didn’t grant removal permits for the other 20 trees, but instead agreed the city would maintain the trees and pay for their lerp treatment for the next year.

“The trees are part of the city’s character and should be maintained, but the cost should not be placed on the property owner if we don’t authorize tree removal,” Planning Director Thomas Tomlinson said.
