Parents at Laurel Elementary School met with the city’s Traffic Commission on Thursday to talk about placing a crossing guard at Birch Street and Poplar Avenue, where an 8-year-old boy was killed almost a year ago.

The city has delayed placing a crossing guard at the intersection to conduct a traffic study to see whether enough children and cars pass through the intersection to warrant a guard. The matter will go before the City Council on April 18. Interim City Manager Tim O’Donnell has said it might be a better idea for the teachers to send the students home across the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Birch Street, where a crossing guard is already posted.
