Postponement Is No Joke

The snow jokes began as soon as CART announced in November that the Bosch Grand Prix would be held in April.

So the Nazareth Speedway staff decided to make light of it.

“Is it going to snow April 9?’ ” it asked in a news release last month.

On Sunday, that seemingly ridiculous suggestion became a reality, and the race was postponed until May 27.

“We were having a little fun with it,” track spokesman Keith Green said.

CART President Andrew Craig said the decision not to run the race today was out of consideration for the fans and that teams needed to cross the country for Sunday’s Toyota Grand Prix at Long Beach.

It was not the first time snow fell on race day. A World Series of Auto Racing event was snowed out 40 miles up the road at Pocono International Raceway in 1973, and a NASCAR race also was postponed in 1993 at Atlanta International Raceway.

This race had been scheduled a month earlier than last year so CART could accommodate requests from its teams to compete May 28 in the Indianapolis 500.
