YORBA LINDA

A Superior Court judge Thursday gave the city the go-ahead to resume work on the Imperial Highway widening project, which could begin as early as next month.

Judge Robert E. Thomas rejected a lawsuit filed to block construction until further environmental studies could be done. The group Yorba Lindans for Responsible Planning had contended that the city had not considered short-term impacts--such as exhaust fumes coming from construction trucks--when it conducted an independent environmental study of the project.

The judge said the city was not required to prepare an environmental impact report. The Orange County Transportation Authority, considered the lead agency in a multicity project to widen the highway that passes through Yorba Linda, had already done environmental studies of its own. Thomas said the city’s study can be looked upon merely as an addendum to OCTA’s report.
