Council to Vote on City Hall Expansion

City Council members will vote Wednesday whether to approve a $540,538 expansion of City Hall to help deal with a space crunch.

Clerks share cubicles and computers, and hallways are designated as storage space in the cramped quarters, city officials said.

“The biggest problem is that there is so much stuff,” said Dana Shigley, director of administrative services. “People are tripping over each other and all the boxes. It’s not productive.”

City officials have recommended that council members approve one of two proposals to deal with the situation in the short term. The council will also talk about a long-term plan to build a bigger City Hall on High Street downtown.

One short-term plan includes moving the Building and Safety Department, which is now at High Street and Moorpark Avenue, to the current City Hall, 799 Moorpark Ave. To do that, two sites would be built next to City Hall, adding about 4,300 square feet.

Shigley said this would allow for all city departments to work together under one roof, making city business run more efficiently. This proposal would cost $128,266 more than a second proposal, which would leave the building and safety division at its existing location.

The city has $420,000 budgeted for the expansion.
