Waves to Host Indiana Blast in A-League

The Waves host the Indiana Blast in an A-League soccer game at 7 tonight at Santa Ana Stadium.

It’s the season opener for the Blast, which is expected to field about the same lineup it used to defeat its Orange County rival, 6-4, last season when the Waves were known as the Zodiac.

The Waves (1-1) are coming off a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bulldogs. Galaxy goalkeeper Matt Reis, on loan to the Waves, is expected to make his second consecutive start.

Sweeper Jose Vasquez will sit out after he receiving a red card against the Bulldogs, and defender Adam Cooper may not play because of a groin injury.

The Waves play the San Diego Flash at 7:30 p.m. Friday at San Diego Mesa College and at 7 p.m. Sunday at Santa Ana Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL

Pairings for the Southern California regional community college volleyball tournament on April 25 are set.

Golden West, which finished second in the Orange Empire conference, has a home match against Santa Barbara, third-place finisher in the South Coast conference.

Orange Coast, third-place finisher in the Orange Empire Conference, will travel to Woodland Hills for a match against South Coast runner-up Pierce.

Both matches will begin at 2 p.m.

The state tournament is April 28-29 at Irvine Valley.

In the semifinals, Long Beach City College, the South Coast champion, plays the winner of the Golden West-Santa Barbara match at 4:30 p.m. and Orange Empire champion Grossmont plays the Pierce-Orange Coast winner at 7 p.m.

The championship match begins at 7 p.m. on April 29.

BASKETBALL

Troy assistant Kevin Flye has been hired as boys’ basketball coach at Eastside Christian, formerly known as Heritage Christian, a school spokesman announced.

Flye, 30, replaces Mark Berokoff, who resigned to seek a college position after leading the Patriots into the first round of the state Division V playoffs.

Flye promised to build on the success started by Berokoff, who had a record of 40-16 in two seasons. Flye has been at Troy two seasons. He played basketball in 1989-90 at Pacific Christian College, now known as Hope International.

TENNIS

Connolly tennis Coach Cari Winkler, a walk-on, has resigned so she can spend more time on her classwork at Cal State Fullerton, Connolly Athletic Director Timmerie Henry said.
